The DeLonghi Magnifica S 22.140.B bean-to-cup coffee machine is the brand's elder statesman, having been on the market since 2011. Despite its somewhat dated appearance, it still offers easy handling and straightforward operation. It provides 2 direct-access drinks (as well as doubles) and a steam wand. The Magnifica S delivers very good coffee results, but when it comes to milk foam, it's not a success. DeLonghi Magnifica S 22.140.b: compact for large containers
The DeLonghi Magnifica S 22.140.B espresso grinder is one of the most popular coffee machines. Its rather compact size offers fairly large containers,suitable for a couple drinking several coffees per day.
- Water: 1.8 L
- Beans: 250 g (equivalent to a bag of coffee)
- Pucks: 14 discs (so you'll need to empty the puck drawer every 14 coffees or so)
Note: over the years, the ECAM 22.140.B has undergone changes, not always for the better. Indeed, the bean hopper, previously semi-opaque and fitted with a seal, is nowcompletely opaque and without a hermetic seal. The coffee beans are now less protected from oxidation and the machine is noisier.
Magnifica S ECAM 22.140.B espresso machine: its features
This entry-level bean-to-cup coffee machine ultimately offers only 2 direct-access drinks:espresso and lungo (as well as doubles), which makes its use limited. Double extractions are performed in a single brewing cycle, saving time when making 2 coffees simultaneously. However, the double extraction significantly degrades your cup result.
It is also equipped with aground coffee chute, allowing the use of pre-ground coffee (ideal for an occasional decaf). This espresso grinder also has asingle steam wand with a plastic coating.
Operating this coffee machine remains very simple, notably with its central button for adjusting coffee strength (i.e., the amount of ground coffee). The control panel gives access to all machine functions.
You'll find the famousadjustable DeLonghi steel grinder with 13 settings. Expert tip: to find the right setting, we recommend starting at position 5 and then refining or coarsening the grind according to the desired result.
Quality coffee extraction for the Delonghi Magnifica S 22.140.B ?
The question you are probably asking yourself is: does the DeLonghi Magnifica offer good coffee? Indeed, this is the main information expected. All the machines we reference undergo a series of tests in order to provide you with an objective opinion and help you find the machine that suits your needs.
The coffee result of the Magnifica S 22.140.B is very good. It offers a balanced extraction with a creamy crema. The water is slightly too hot, but does not burn the flavors of your coffee. However, if you want an intense and creamy coffee, you will have to choose the maximum intensity, which represents 13 g (when a Barista will use a maximum of 10 g). This high grammage risks overconsumption of coffeeand can be expensive to use.
As for the steam wand, it is a major drawback. The result is disappointing despite the 15 bars of pressure, the milk foam rises with difficulty and the result is more like hot milk than creamy foam. If this criterion is important for your purchase, we advise you to opt for the evolution of the Magnifica, the DeLonghi 22.127.B equipped with an improved steam wand.
How to maintain your DeLonghi Magnifica S coffee machine
Having found the coffee machine that suits your needs and the coffee beans that match your tastes is already a good step. However, over time, your machine may produce a less qualitative result, the problem probably comes from maintenance. Here is how to properly maintain your DeLonghi 22.140.B coffee machine:
- Filtration: in order to filter the limestone particles in the water and purify the taste of the water (so as not to alter the flavors of your coffee) we advise you to put a filter cartridge (not provided). To be changed every 2 to 3 months depending on the hardness of your water.
- Descaling: despite the use of a filtration system, it is essential to perform descaling in order to remove the limestone that can deposit on the thermoblock and in the spouts. A dose of descaling product (provided) with the machine.
- Cleaning: the coffee group is removable, allowing it to be cleaned under warm water 1 time per week. The recovery tanks can be cleaned in the dishwasher 1 time per week as well.
- The milk system: remember to properly purge before and after use and to clean it with a suitable milk cleaner in order to remove all bacteria.

This DeLonghi coffee machine proves that it still has its place on the market thanks to its ease of use and its very balanced coffee result. However, it is starting to show signs of aging, particularly in its less modern designthan the latest Magnifica, but also in its limited drink options.
For whom is this machine made for?If this is your first purchase of an espresso grinder, this is a suitable machine, especially for its ease of use. However, if you want a machine capable of perfectly making creamy milk foam, we recommend its newer version, the Magnifica S 22.127.B.
